US Tops Countries With Most Cosmetic Surgeries Per

The International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ISAPS) released the list of countries with the most aesthetic or cosmetic procedures performed by board-certified plastic surgeons. At the top of the list is the United States, with Brazil in second place. Wrapping up the top five countries are China, Japan and India, at third, fourth and fifth, respectively.

At sixth to tenth place are Mexico, Italy, South Korea, France and Colombia. Germany, Turkey, Spain, Russia and Canada ranked 11th to 16th, respectively.

Lipoplasty is still the top surgical procedure performed, corresponding to 23 percent of all surgical procedures performed. This is followed by breast augmentation, blepharoplasty and rhinoplasty at 16 percent, 11.5 percent and 10.4 percent, respectively. Abdominoplasty represents frequency at 7.2 percent of the total cosmetic procedures.

However, popularity of various surgical procedures varies from one country to another. But for the US and the other top four countries, they share the same one—lipoplasty. As for nonsurgical procedures, Botox® ranked first in terms of frequency.

In the 2011 study, ISAPS also included the average amount that plastic surgeons collect as fees charged for every procedure. Facelift tops the survey as the most expensive cosmetic procedure.

As a collective body of plastic surgeons around the world, ISAPS collects data only from board-certified, practicing surgeons. To date, the organization estimates the number to be around 33,000 qualified plastic surgeons.

ISAPS also projected the number of surgical procedures performed at 9.4 million and nonsurgical procedures performed estimated at 9 million, bringing a total of over 18 million cosmetic procedures. These figures do not account for procedures performed by unqualified professionals.
